The Red River Resistance was the first major crisis that the new Canadian government faced after Confederation in 1867. The Canadian government, led by Prime Minister Macdonald, was very concerned that the Americans were going to try and expand into Rupert's Land first.
Canada bought Rupert's Land from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1869, which included the Red River Settlement, where a large population of Metis had lived for many years. A young Metis man named Louis Riel was not pleased with the way the government of Canada was pushing its way into the west and were not consulting with those who already lived there, like the Metis.
Louis Riel and his Metis followers decided to take a stand against Canada's expansion west both politically and physically, resulting in the the Red River Resistance. The Red River Resistance remains a defining moment for the Metis, the province of Manitoba and Canada as a nation to this day.
