The Manitoba Act officially made Manitoba the fifth province of Canada on July 15, 1870. The Manitoba Act was based around the rights Riel declared for the Metis during the Red River Resistance. Because of Louis Riel the Metis of Manitoba were guaranteed land, which they called scrip.
Despite the positives of the Manitoba Act, the Metis soon became the minority as more and more European settlers moved west pushing the Metis out of their traditional homeland making the resistance main goal a failure in the end. Even though the Red River Resistance was considered a failure, it did prove to the Canadian government that Confederation was not going to be easy in a country as diverse as Canada.
Reflection Question!: The Metis are one of the three Indigenous groups recognized by the government of Canada today. Do you think the Red River Resistance was a failure? Why or why not? Justify your answer.
