- Riel was born on 22 October, 1844 in the Red River Settlement, Rupert's Land, British North America
- He was bilingual (French and English) * IMPORTANT to unite all Metis at Red River!
- He came from a Catholic family
- In 1858 he was sent to Montreal to become a priest
- In 1868 he returned to the Red River Settlement well educated, but not a priest
- In 1869 he set up a provisional (temporary) government in Red River to protect Metis rights
- He was elected to the House of Commons 3 times - but never actually took his seat
- Riel is known as the Father of Manitoba and the Leader of the Metis people
- Louis Riel was hanged for treason on November 16, 1885 in Regina, SK
